Engineer the future of mobile radio together with Rohde & Schwarz and VDE
Munich, Apr 04, 2012 - Video streaming, video telephony, online gaming: The new LTE wireless standard opens up new application areas for smartphones – a challenge for manufacturers of T&M equipment for mobile radio devices. As a leading supplier in this field, Rohde & Schwarz gives keen engineering students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge. The electronics company is again holding its international case study competition in cooperation with the German Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE).
The LTE fourth generation wireless standard is gaining momentum. First networks are already in operation in Europe, USA and Asia. With download rates of up to 100 Mbit/s, the new standard supports smartphone applications such as streaming of high-definition television, online gaming and video conferences. Network operators and manufacturers of mobile radio devices need special test solutions for these integrated services. Rohde & Schwarz, world market leader for wireless communications testers and one of the first to offer LTE measurements, develops innovative products for these customer requirements.
Students can help the company in this mission: The ninth case study competition under the motto "Engineer the future! The future of mobile radio is in your hands!" invites students to put their knowledge to practice. The preliminary rounds, which will be held at nine universities in Germany and two in Singapore, start on May 8, 2012. Engineering students will work in teams to develop a multitechnology mobile radio tester. While doing so, they will have an opportunity to experience what it is like to work as an engineer at Rohde & Schwarz. The tasks, which are related to all seven ISO/OSI layers of an LTE wireless network, require interdisciplinary knowledge.
In addition to solid technical knowledge, soft skills such as excellent presentation skills and power of persuasion also play an important role. To qualify for the final round, the teams will have to present their results and convince a highly qualified jury comprising a professor, an engineer and a human resources officer from Rohde & Schwarz.
The final round will take place at Rohde & Schwarz headquarters in Munich on June 21 and 22, 2012. The 11 winning teams from the preliminary rounds will compete against each other on an in-depth task. Each member of the winning team will take home a brand-new Apple iPad 3, and their university will be awarded EUR 2,000.
